This page will be removed soon as Fiji School of Nursing will be moved under Fiji National University The Fiji School of Nursing is the government’s sole provider for nurse training and education in both the pre-service and in-service area for local and regional needs. It offers a three-year competency based Diploma of Nursing programme as well as post basic courses in Midwifery, Public Health Nursing, Mental Health and Advanced Nursing Practice for Nurse Practitioners. Fiji School of Nursing is a Tertiary Institution for Nursing based within the Ministry of Health infrastructure offering both basic and post basic training courses for nurses. The school offers a three year competency based Diploma of nursing program to Fiji citizens as well as regional students. This revised curriculum was introduced in 2004 jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Health Fiji, World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Australian Government under the Fiji Health Sector improvement Program and the technical support is provided from the School of Nursing at the James Cook University (JCU) in Townsville, Australia. In this revised basic program, a 100% attendance in all areas of learning such as lectures, tutorials, clinical and science laboratory sessions and clinical attachment must be met before one is allowed to move on to the next year of study or to sit the final examination. In the three years of study, 62% of time is for classroom learning and 38% is spend in the Clinical areas, either at the Colonial War Memorial (Suva) or Lautoka Hospital, including Community Health Attachment. Because the training is heavily practical oriented, the support and contribution of clinicians towards students learning is vital. Various post – basic courses are on offer at the Fiji School of Nursing each year, depending on the need of the country for specific Nursing skills. Post basic courses offered on a regular basis are the Midwifery Course, Public Health Course, and recently the Mental Health Nursing Course. There are other upskilling courses introduced and run whenever the need arises. The bachelor of Nursing and Masters Program is also on offer on campus via Distance Education through the support of the James Cook University. |
