The Health Research Unit is part of the Department of Information, Planning and Infrastructure. The current Health Research Officer is: Dr. Shareen Ali. The role of the Health Research Officer is:
- Coordinate all health related research activities for the Ministry of Health [this includes providing the approved format to would be researchers receiving research submissions, assigning a primary reviewer in consultation with the Chairperson of the National Health Research Committee [NHRC], convening meetings of the NHRC and the Fiji National Research Ethics Review Committee [FNRERC].
- Provide secretariat for the NHRC
- Provide secretariat for the FNRERC
- Represent Ministry of Health to other research committees [such as National Centre for Health Promotion, National Advisory Committee on Aids and other Research sub - committees]
- Represent the Ministry of Health [focal point] for Pacific Health Research Council [PHRC]
- Coordinate and facilitate capacity building for Ministry of Health staff on Research Methodologies
- Coordinate and facilitate management research for Ministry of Health
- Monitor the progress of all research activities endorsed by the NHRC and FNRERC
- Facilitate activities of the Divisional Health Research Committees
- Participate in regional research activities as and when required
- Produce a work plan and an annual report on the activities of NHRC and FNRERC
Any other research – related activities as assigned by the Permanent Secretary of Health or the Chairs of NHRC and FNRERC
