Boil Water, Wash Hands to stop Disease Spread
- 01/02/2010
News in brief:
(MONDAY FEBRUARY 1ST 2010, No:101/MOH) BOIL WATER, WASH HANDS TO STOP DISEASE SPREAD
The Ministry of Health is once again reminding members of the public to adhere to health advise given out to stop the spread of water-borne diseases.
Health spokesman Iliesa Tora said people need to practice what they have been taught or advised on.
“This is a serious issue and one we would like to stress to people once again,” Mr Tora said.
“We need people to live clean. Cleanliness will help in ensuring that people do not get sick, especially from water-borne diseases.”
The advise comes after the ministry confirmed diarrhoea cases at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in the past two weeks.
Mr Tora said the ministry believes that cases presented at the CWM Hospital were direct results of people either drinking dirty or contaminated water or the lack of proper water supply resulting in unhealthy practices.
He added that it was important for people to practice the following advise:
- Boil all drinking water
- Store drinking water safely in a clean container and environment
- Wash hands with soap and water after doing household work, after visiting the toilet, before eating and after playing or touching pets
- Cover food properly and keep it safe from flies
- Make sure your hands are clean before you handle food while cooking or serve food before eating
Mr Tora said parents and guardians of sick children should seek medical help and advise early.
“That is very important for parents to do. They should seek medical assistance early as soon as they notice changes to their children’s health,” he said.
The ministry also advises parents to keep their children away from school and at home if they are sick.
“If they start having diarrhea then they should keep the kids at home and not send them to school. That can prove unwise if kids are sent to school because that will end in the spread of diarrhea,” he added.
The ministry is also now monitoring the other divisions to see if there is any reported case of diarrhea being recorded there as well.
