Clean up to prevent dengue
- 14/01/2010
MEMBERS of the communities have been asked to help clean up their own compounds and surroundings as the Ministry of Health targets mosquito breeding areas in a bid to prevent dengue fever.
All health vector control teams in the country have been asked to carry out clean up campaigns.
While the planned campaign had started in November 2009, the arrival of Cyclone Mick in late December meant urgent measures needed to be taken now after larvae counts carried out at different centres around the country revealed a high count of adult mosquito.
Health Media Liaison Officer Iliesa Tora said a directive has been sent to all vector control teams around the country to ensure that their areas are cleaned up.
Mr Tora said it was important that members of the public are also brought into line.
“They need to be taking some action in ensuring their compounds are clean,” he said.
“We need everyone to work together in this campaign.”
November to March is the normal dengue period because of the fact that this is also when Fiji stands to get a lot of cyclones, hurricanes or flooding.
