Mrs Luisa Ranamalo, Manager, Mahaffy Girls Home.

Staff and especially Children.

It is indeed a privilege and a great pleasure  for me to be here today.  I thank you for allowing me to bring the “Fiji Day Celebrations” closer to you.

It is that time again when we hold Fiji Day Celebrations.  This year, Fiji Day Celebration is held together with “Education Week”.

This year’s celebration is organized for you, the young people and children because you are the key to having a more unified Fiji, tomorrow.  It is through instilling understanding and mutual respect from a young age that one can aspire to building a better country.

It is with the above,  that the theme for the Fiji Day’s Celebration 2009 is “Educating Fiji towards Change, Peace and Progress”.  As highlighted earlier this is targeting the young.

This includes you the children here at the Home.  I am here representing Government to ensure that you are part of the celebration.  It does not mean that though you are not involved at Albert Park or at the other centres of celebration that you are left out.  These celebrations are for you, our future leaders and this small gift indicates that we have not forgotten you.

Aside from that, I am also more importantly here as a father/mother to encourage you that this not the end of the road.  Despite whatever factors that resulted in your being here, I am here to tell you that this could be a new beginning for you.  There is no  sense in suffering – accept it and overcome.  This is life.  There is no need to dwell on the past.  Like our theme is suggesting, it is all possible through education.  I urge you to be devoted to your studies or activities you may be involved in at the Home.  It is through this that you can have another chance at improving your life in the future.  I urge you to embrace the opportunity .before you.  Take what you have learned and put it to good use.  Leave behind that is not helpful and bring forward with the lessons that will be the working parts of your greatest invention ever – your LIFE.

Also to the management and staff of the Home, I must take this opportunity to thank you in the key role that you play in teaching and guiding our young children to be better citizens of this nation.  Government is truly appreciative of the role that you play  in looking after the children.  Thank you for your patience, smile, helping hand, listening ears and sometimes having to go the extra mile in caring for the children.  The gift presented to you today is not sufficient in comparison to the care provided for the children, and for that,  Government is truly thankful.

In closing, I thank you again for allowing me to spend time with you and also for allowing me to share my thoughts.  It has meant a lot for me.

Thank you and May God Bless Us All as we celebrate Fiji Day.

Neil Sharma.
